M.S. - Marriage and Family Therapy

Program Description:

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are uniquely trained to use psychotherapy and psych-education to help people improve their ability to relate to others. Clinically, an individual's symptoms are understood and treated in the context of these important relationships. Wile MFTs work in the same settings as other therapists, they are the best trained to help people make informed relationship decisions that promote emotional /psychological adjustment in themselves and others. Program curriculum meets licensing criteria in most states (including Wisconsin and Minnesota), prepares students for membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and adheres to the rigorous standards for training set by the Commission on Accreditation of Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).

International Student Requirements:

Admission requirements include: (1) Admission to a graduate degree program and the Graduate School; (2) English proficiency TOEFL score of at least 173 computer-based and 500 paper-based or 213 computer-based, 550 paper-based depending on which program is chosen, and 61 Internet-based. Test scores should be sent directly to UW-Stout (school code #1740); (3) Official copies of all post-secondary transcripts (translated into English), including proof of baccalaureate and/or highest earned degree; (4) Undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; (5) specific program requirements. Contact program directors for information; (6) Documented evidence of sufficient financial resources to complete a degree program; (7) the enclosed application form along with a non-refundable application fee payable to UW-Stout in U.S. funds.
