Program Description:

The Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology offers the M.Ed. in Professional School counseling and Professional Community Counseling. The school counseling option leads to certification in school counseling and licensing as a professional counselor while the community counseling option leads to a wide variety of positions in agencies as well as licensure as a professional counselor. Both options consist of a minimum of 48 semester hours which include core courses in theory and practice of counseling, life span and career development, individual and group counseling, multicultural counseling, testing and appraisal, and research. Supervised practicum and internship experience specific to the chosen option also are required. The department of Counseling and Education Psychology also offers the Ed.S. degree with options in school or community counseling for those with experience desiring advanced preparation. The degree consists of 27 semester hours beyond the master's degree. The program in school counseling is designed for graduate students who currently hold S-5 certification in school counseling. The program in community counseling is designed for graduate students who currently hold a master's degree in counseling or a closely related field. These programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
