Combinatorics is the study of discrete structures and their properties. It includes coding theory, combinatorial design, enumeration theory, graph theory and polyhedral theory. Optimization, or mathematical programming, is the study of maximizing and minimizing functions subject to specified boundary conditions or constraints.
