Program Description:

Surrounded by the beauty of Lake Champlain to the west and the Green Mountains to the east, the University of Vermont offers the doctor of physical therapy program which includes coursework related to the science and art of physical therapy, including basic, clinical and applied sciences and basic concepts of practice management, ethics and quality in health care. The physical therapy program combines seminars, lectures and hands-on lab experiences that allow students to integrate clinical, theoretical and professional practice concepts. The program includes 36 weeks of full -time internship. Graduates earn a doctoral degree in physical therapy (D.P.T.).

The curriculum includes four internship courses that comprise 36 weeks of full-time clinical education experience. Students practice in a variety of settings under the supervision of clinical instructors who are licensed physical therapists. The University of Vermont contracts with over 270 clinical sites for student internships. These experiences are scheduled throughout northeastern United States with some experiences offered in other parts of the country.

A minimum of 101 semester credit hours, a grade point average of 3.0, and successful completion of all internship experiences and a comprehensive examination are required for graduation.

Accreditation:

The Physical Therapy program at the University of Vermont is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Eligibility Requirements:

Students applying to the physical therapy program must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or greater in their undergraduate studies. All applicants must complete the following prerequisite courses prior to entry into the DPT program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater in the science prerequisite courses in this list. •Two semesters of anatomy/physiology •Two semesters of college chemistry with labs •Two semesters of physics with labs •One semester of biology •One semester of psychology •One semester of statistics

To be eligible for admission to any program, applicants must hold a U.S. baccalaureate degree or an equivalent international degree earned prior to the date of first graduate enrollment at The University of Vermont. If the degree is from an unaccredited institution, students must submit both general and advanced subject GRE scores. Applicants are expected to be fluent in English; instruction at The University of Vermont is conducted in English. There is no intensive English as a Second Language program at the University, although limited instruction is available to enhance speaking fluency in English.
