Program Description:

The University of Utah offers a two-year masters degree program in Genetic Counseling and teaches competencies preparing students to take the American Board of Genetic Counseling certification examination. The Program integrates coursework, clinical rotations, supplementary activities and an independent research project.

The Program is housed in the School of Medicine and is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Departments of Human Genetics, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Huntsman Cancer Institute, with participation from Intermountain Health Care Hospitals, Utah State Department of Health, ARUP Laboratories and Myriad Genetics.

Students obtain basic psychosocial skills in two courses offered by other departments. All of the other courses have been developed and tailored for the genetic counseling students. The University of Utah and many of the participating program faculty have achieved regional, national and international reputations in genetics.

The Program strives to prepare genetic counselors for careers in clinical and research practice by developing proficiency in the American Board of Genetic Counseling Practice-Based Competencies (ABGC). The University of Utah Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling has been awarded full accreditation from the ABGC.

The program includes courses in counseling skills; multicultural counseling; genetic counseling; clinical,biochemical,human, perinatal & cancer genetics; developmental genetics; clinical epidemiology; teratology; molecular and cytogenetic laboratory skills; research methods and ethical and legal issues. Clinical rotations in several institutions provide experience in cancer, laboratory, perinatal, pediatric, subspecialty, teratology and adult genetics settings. An elective rotation allows students a unique experience (for example, students may design a rotation in laboratory techniques or a subspecialty clinic), or students may choose an out-of-state clinic or more in-depth training in an area of interest. Research experience is obtained through an independent research project. Case conferences, seminars and journal clubs round out the program.

Accreditation:

The University of Utah Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling has been awarded full accreditation from the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Eligibility Requirements:

- Baccalaureate degree with GPA at least 3.0.
- Required Courses at college level: biochemistry, biology, general chemistry, genetics, psychology, statistics. Embryology and anatomy recommended.
- Advocacy experience.
- Verbal, analytical and quantitative GRE scores (institution code 4853, department code 0210) not more than 5 years old. Candidates with a master's or doctoral degree are not required to submit GRE scores.
- Current resume or curriculum vitae (CV).
- Official academic transcript(s) from each college or university attended beyond secondary level.
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with applicant's academic accomplishments, counseling-related activities, and/or potential to be a genetic counselor.
- Personal Statement of 2-3 pages in length must describe perception of what a genetic counselor does, reasons for selecting this career, experiences that prepared applicant for the profession, career goals, and advocacy experiences.

International Student Requirements:

International Students: TOEFL test score (Test of English as a Foreign Language), if native language is not English, with a score of at least 79 (550 or 213 if computer-based on older tests). The official TOEFL score must be sent to the University [institution code = 4853; department code = 06] and must not be over two years old at the time of admission. Applicants with an undergraduate or graduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. are not required to take the TOEFL.
