Program Description:

The PgCert/PgDip/MSc in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is available by Distance Learning (full-time and part-time modes). It is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences.

This course provides an advanced education in the principles and practice of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), using case study material to illustrate concepts and techniques. The course is designed to give students a thorough understanding of:

It also provides extensive hands-on experience of proprietary GIS software.

The PgDip comprises eight taught modules, covering data models and data structures, acquisition and management of data, spatial analysis and modelling, remote sensing, GIS design and implementation issues, GIS programming and customisation and database technology.
Concepts and techniques are illustrated using case study material drawn from a variety of application areas, although students choose one optional module in which they focus on applications of GIS to either environmental management or health and health care issues.
Practical work is undertaken using a variety of commerical software including ArcGIS and ERDAS Imagine.

For the award of MSc the student must undertake an independent research project, submitted as a written dissertation.
