Program Description:

The School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Ulster has a well established reputation for teaching high quality fully online programmes and registers some 250 students each year to its suite of postgraduate courses. The PgDip/MSc in Environmental Management is part-time and offered by Distance Learning.

Environmental management techniques are integral to conservation, agriculture, forestry, industry and countryside planning. This online course is designed for new graduates who lack professional experience in environment management and people already in environment-related employment, who wish to develop their careers by updating their knowledge and skills. It aims to satisfy an industrial and public sector demand for science-qualified environmental management personnel.

Specific Objectives
The principles and practice of Environmental Management are covered, with specific objectives being to:

1. Understand the importance of an evidence-based approach in developing management strategies.

2. Apply quantitative techniques to assess the effects of environmental management.

3. Produce environmental impact statements and advise on implementing environmental management systems.

4. Apply structured planning principles to site biodiversity management and ecosystem restoration.

5. Monitor pollution and assess its environmental effects.

The course aims to set environmental management tools in the context of an understanding of ecosystem structure/function and legislative/policy frameworks.

Eligibility Requirements:

Entry to the PgDip:
Applicants must hold a degree in a science related subject or equivalent or demonstrate their ability to undertake the course through the accreditation of prior learning.

Entry to the MSc:
Students initially register for the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip). Students who complete the PgDip with an overall mark of 50% or higher can proceed to the MSc programme. Students successfully completing the research project and with a pass mark of greater than or equal to 70% will graduate with an MSc in Environmental Management with distinction. Those who obtain a pass mark of greater than or equal to 50%, but less than 70%, will graduate with an MSc in Environmental Management.

International Student Requirements:

English language requirements - IELTS overall band 6.0 with no contributing band less than 5.5 or TOEFL 550 in the paper based-test.
