Program Information

Degree Offered

Master of Industrial Design

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Masters of Industrial Design (MID) program at the University of the Arts prepares students from a range of professional backgrounds for careers that put people and their experiences first. The program focuses on a design process that is human-centered, and promotes collaboration across disciplines.

MID at UArts recognizes design as the new management tool, instrumental in fostering strategic creativity and organizational learning. Students engage through strategic partnerships with local organizations and businesses like MAKE Philly, The Hacktory and NextFabLab. Projects build on feedback and create dialog, and models and prototypes manifest collective learning and developing assumptions.

Recognizing the need to balance ecological, social and economic values in the development of innovative solutions, MID students partner with industries and organizations that are looking for ways to develop and grow more sustainably and that are interested in engaging such change through design.

The program promotes a design process that facilitates collaborative projects across disciplines, and that produces actionable models and scenarios to promote change. Offering design input when it matters most – at the earliest stages of the development cycle and, in particular, during the initial project definition - project outcomes range from design of new services, design for user experience, and the development of organizations and new businesses.

The Master of Industrial Design offers two curriculum options. First, the two-year, 60-credit program consists of studio, methods and seminar courses. Second, the three-year, 78-credit curriculum is an extension of the two-year program that provides additional opportunities to build skills and take graduate level seminars that are shared among other graduate programs at UARTS. Both programs award a Masters of Industrial Design degree.

All students will engage in project work and partnerships with organizations and business, and complete a required thesis.
