Degree Offered

Master of Music in Jazz Studies

Format: Campus

Program Description:

Designed to give students the opportunity to focus on individual career goals, the MM in Jazz Studies program is open to a small but highly advanced group of students who have an undergraduate degree in jazz studies or an undergraduate degree in music with significant experience in jazz and contemporary music, or an equivalent degree or experience.

Students are offered advanced private instruction in their major area to develop professional-level artistry and skills, as well as opportunities for internships and ensemble performances. In addition to developing as improvisers and instrumentalists, students explore different career options within the music field, and are encouraged to engage in research, writing, analysis, current technology, and the development of pedagogical skills that will greatly increase their options for success upon graduation.

The MM in Jazz Studies is a 32-credit degree-granting program that can be completed in one academic year. Besides private instrumental instruction, students take coursework in arranging, composing, transcribing and analyzing jazz and contemporary music; MIDI and music technology; music journalism and jazz pedagogy. The program requires a final project that includes a thesis and recital. The project integrates in-depth research on a topic of special relevance with personal musical growth, culminating in a public performance.
