Program Information

Degree Offered

M.A.

Program Description:

The history, contemporary circumstances, and cultures of people of African descent constitute one of the most neglected areas of Latin American Studies. ILAS seeks to fill this void and provide the basis for expanded scholarship and policy making in this area with its African Diaspora Studies concentration. Course offerings and faculty interest in this area include: the historiography of peoples of African descent in Latin America and the Caribbean; social and cultural linkages between Africa and the Latin American Diaspora and among Diasporan communities; racial, ethnic, and cultural identities in Latin America's African Diaspora; and power relations in the Latin American African Diaspora, particularly those related to gender, race, and nation.
