Degree Offered

Master of Education (M.Ed.)

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The University of Tampa's Master of Education (M.Ed.) program prepares individuals for a variety of roles in schools and other educational and entrepreneurial settings. Candidates in our multipurpose program are immersed in a rigorous mix of theory and practice that guides participants toward careers in teaching and future educational leadership.

The program consists of two unique tracks: one for students who are seeking initial teaching licensure, and another for professional teachers who wish to boost their knowledge and skills.

Track I is designed to assist career changers and individuals who do not have an undergraduate degree in education. Candidates come to UT from a wide variety of fields, including the sciences, mathematics, psychology, sociology, the arts, foreign languages, business, and other professional areas. This track places emphasis on the psychology of the learner, classroom management and positive learning environments, assessment of student performance, instructional design, ethics and dispositions of a teacher, and supervised field experiences.

Track II is designed for professionals in K-12 settings who are seeking advanced study to enhance their teaching and leadership skills in the field of education. Candidates selecting Track II must have an undergraduate degree in education or hold a professional teaching certificate. This track places emphasis on curriculum theory, pedagogy and innovation in education, advocacy, social dimensions of learning, and research. Candidates in Track II complete a thesis, special project, or oral examination as a culminating experience.

Candidates in the M.Ed. program progress through the program in courses that are uniquely and individually designed to provide maximum professional development, research skills, reading and writing competencies, and understanding of diverse populations of K-12 students.

Accreditation:

The University of Tampa is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees. Its Teacher Education Programs are accredited by the Florida State Board of Education.
