Program Description:

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with Teaching Credential program is an intensive, 12 and a half-month program that prepares graduates to fill one of the many anticipated career opportunities in our nation’s schools. MAT students will earn a Master’s degree and preliminary teaching credential, with field-based experiences that are tied directly to coursework.

* Students earn both a Master's degree and teaching credential in 12 and a half months.
* Students have significantly more field-based experiences and achieve a higher level of sophistication with using technology as an instructional tool.
* The program is specifically designed to prepare teachers for diverse students in urban schools.
* MAT graduates will be in high demand and can enter the salary scale at a higher level in most school districts.
* The program is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Supervised field experiences are an integral part of every course. From the beginning of the program, students are placed in local classrooms to learn practical applications of theories and instructional methods from experienced teachers. Students complete two semesters of student teaching.

USC is authorized to recommend qualified persons to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) for receipt of credentials. Students who plan to pursue credentials in other states are advised to become familiar with the specific requirements in their state of interest. USC offers a Multiple Subject Teaching (MST) Credential and and Single Subject Teaching (SST) Credential. Single subject offerings include Music (MAT-Music is a joint program with USC Thorton School of Music), English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. Anticipated offerings beginning in January 2012 include a Special Education certification and a Gifted Education certification. The Gifted Education certificate is a 12-unit certificate that will challenge you to develop the specialized knowledge and skills needed to provide instruction, balanced between theory and application, that is relevant and meaningful to all students, regardless of their cognitive level.
