Program Description:
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with Teaching Credential program is an intensive 13-month program that prepares graduates to fill one of the many anticipated career opportunities in our nation’s schools. MAT students will earn a Master’s degree and preliminary teaching credential, with field-based experiences that are tied directly to coursework.
USC is authorized to recommend qualified candidates to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) for receipt of credentials. USC offers a Multiple Subject Teaching (MST) Credential or a Single Subject Teaching (SST) Credential. Single subject offerings include Music (MAT-Music is a joint program with USC Thorton School of Music), English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.
Distinctive Program Benefits:
-Students earn both a Master's degree and teaching credential in just over a year.
-Students gain field-based teaching experiences and achieve a high level of sophistication in using technology as an instructional tool.
-The program is specifically designed to prepare teachers for diverse students in urban schools.
-MAT graduates will be in high demand and can enter the salary scale at a higher level in most school districts.
-Supervised field experiences are an integral part of every course. From the beginning of the program, students are placed in local classrooms to learn practical applications of theories and instructional methods from experienced teachers. Students complete two semesters of student teaching.
-State of the art classrooms in an off-campus location at the USC City Center.
-USC participates in Math for America. The MFA Fellowship is a five-year competitive program for mathematically-talented individuals who are new to teaching. MFA LA Fellows receive a full tuition scholarship to attend the USC MAT. During years 2-5, Fellows teach in LAUSD public schools and receive an annual stipend of $20,000, mentoring, and professional development services.
-The USC Noyce Science Teacher Scholarship program provides financial and professional support for students enrolled in the MAT program who aspire to become science teachers. USC Robert Noyce Science Scholars receive a stipend of $20,000, which is applied to tuition over the course of the full-time MAT program. Scholars are also eligible for additional tuition support from the Rossier School of Education based on the overall strength of their application.
