Program Information
Degree Offered
M.A.- East Asian Languages and Cultures, Ph.D.- East Asian Languages and Cultures
Program Description:
The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) offers students a well rounded interdisciplinary education on East Asia not only by focusing on the study of languages, linguistics, literature, thought and civilizations of China, Japan and Korea but also by encouraging cross-registration with other departments to enhance theoretical and methodological skills. Our students have combined theories from Cultural Studies, Film, Criticism, Psychoanalysis, Education and others to broaden more traditional theoretical methods which often provide a different perspective on and reading of the texts in their field. This approach, which allows students a certain amount of flexibility, enhances their research skills and forms them to become well rounded scholars. To this end, we allow Ph.D. students, if they wish to do so, to choose to take one of their three Ph.D. Qualifying exams, in a related field, from another department. We have had students test in everything from Japanese Religious Thought and Theory, to Critical Theory and Cinema, to Modern Chinese History.
