Program Description:

The MPhil in Research Methodology is a modularised course which allows you to obtain a higher research degree by both programme work and dissertation to gain knowledge of and competence in doing research through a study of research methodology and through application in practice and to design, and conduct and write-up your own research project for publication or other purposes.
Aims:
Studying for the MPhil in Research Methodology provides an opportunity for you to:
• Understand the fundamental philosophy and methodology of social and educational research
• Experience critiquing different research methodologies and techniques
• Gain the skills for conducting and analysing research
• To design, conduct and write-up your own research project for publication or other purposes
• Acquire new skills in presenting and communicating research to different audiences
Structure & Assessment:
The programme involves six taught core units, two taught elective units and a dissertation of 20,000 – 30,000 words. As part of a flourishing research community you will be in a stimulating environment for conducting your own research, including seminars, workshops, one-to-one supervision and peer involvement.
Your dissertation will be based on research following your own professional interests and/or in your workplace. You will be allocated a dissertation supervisor with appropriate academic expertise.

You then choose two taught elective units from the following choices:
• Policy and Programme Evaluation Research
• The Self in Case Study Research
• Small Group/Classroom Interaction Analysis
• Ethnographic Research
• Action Research

If English is not your first language, the University of Southampton English Language requirements for study apply i.e.TOEFL 600 / computer based 250 or better for IELTS 6.5 or better
