MA - Jewish History and Culture

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The study of Jewish history and culture is one of the Fastest growing and most exciting areas of research today. It draws upon the fascination with an ancient civilisation that was the matrix for Christianity and Islam, but continued to evolve and develop in its own right to the present day. More recently, the fate of the Jews in the Second World War, the Holocaust, is a pivotal event in modern history. This adventurous and flourishing new programme is designed to give you a detailed appreciation of the main currents in Jewish history and culture through the ages and to equip you with the skills necessary to pursue independent research at doctoral level or for use in a variety of professional fields such as teaching, community relations or social work. The subject is inherently multi- and inter-disciplinary: it traverses history from the classical world to the contemporary scene, theology, literature, sociology, Middle Eastern studies and the study of modern culture. Because the Jews are a diaspora people, to study them involves crossing geographical as well as temporal or subject boundaries. The Jews cannot be studied in isolation and the comparative framework has to extend from the juxtaposition of Jewish cultures in various area and countries, to appreciations of the relations between Jews and non-Jews throughout the ages.
