Program Description:

At Southampton our approach emphasises the great variety of information about past societies that can be gained by the study of their cultural remains. This information, recovered through analytical studies, guided by theoretical frameworks and tested against exacting standards, forms the basis for interpreting patterns of human behaviour and for explaining the mechanisms of cultural change and social evolution.Research at Southampton is particularly directed within the fields of: archaeology science (ceramics, faunal analysis, computing, lithics); rock art; art and representation; maritime archaeology; material culture; historical archaeology, and the application of documentary sources to the physical record, the theoretical and intellectual framework of archaeology, anthropology and its relation to archaeology; and 'public archaeology', the Third World, the role of archaeological organisation in Britain and problems of cultural resource and heritage management.
