Program Information
Degree Offered
M.A.- Linguistics;, Graduate Certificate - Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
Format: Campus
Program Description:
Linguistics is primarily an upper-level and graduate discipline with strong interdisciplinary concerns. Students interested in graduate study in linguistics are urged to acquire a language background in their undergraduate programs, regardless of their major field of study. Undergraduate coursework equivalent to the materials covered in course LIN 3010 is a strongly recommended prerequisite to graduate study; prospective graduate students who have not had this course or its equivalent must enroll in LIN 5700 during their first term as graduate students, or during the first term that it becomes available, if not offered during the first term. The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) is for persons who already hold or are simultaneously pursuing an advanced degree, in another field, such as English, Foreign Languages, or Education. The TESL certification should not be confused with the Florida Public Schools certification. Graduate Certificate can be completed within five to six graduate courses.
