Degree Offered
M.Sc.-Experimental Archaeology
Format: Campus
Program Description:
Experimental approaches are amongst the ways by which archaeologists develop understandings of archaeological evidence - as such they are central to the archaeological process. The MSc in Experimental Archaeology examines the traditional strengths of experimental archaeology - reconstructing ancient craft practices, testing building reconstructions and understanding site formation processes. However, we also question the assumptions that underpin such studies - we encourage you to probe their (frequently unacknowledged) theoretical frameworks and to scrutinise the claims to objectivity which accompany them. Through a combination of practical engagement with materials and process, and through theoretical critique, this programme enables you to explore (and to create) future directions for experimental archaeology - thereby contributing to our understanding of humanity's past. The programme is designed to appeal to all those who want to enhance their understanding of the past through the process of "doing" and "making" in the present, and will be especially valuable to those who wish to pursue careers or doctoral research in this field.
