Degree Offered
M.A.-Socio-Legal Research
Format: Campus
Program Description:
You'll investigate the relationship between legal systems and the societies in which they are embedded. You'll explore the problematic relationship between the 'law in the books' and the 'law in action'. The course will equip you for a research career in many settings. This includes government and public policy-making, law reform, advisory to pressure groups or non-governmental organizations, and higher education.
The MA in Socio-Legal Research builds upon the long-standing tradition of socio-legal scholarship for which Sheffield is well-known. The MA Socio-Legal Research responds to the need for the UK to develop research capacity in all types of legal research, in particular socio-legal research. This need has been recognised by the research councils, the learned societies for law (SLS and SLSA), the Committee of Heads of Law Schools, and independent research such as the Nuffield Foundation Inquiry into Empirical Research in Law (2006).
ESRC recognition has been awarded for this course.
Details of ESRC studentship grants for certain postgraduate programmes are advertised on our website during the winter months.
