Program Information
Degree Offered
M.A.-American Literature
Format: Campus
Program Description:
This MA offers you an opportunity to study American literary works within a variety of contexts.
The modules range across urban studies, gender studies, travel writing, sports studies, queer theory, postmodernism, autobiographical and epistolary studies. The emphasis of the MA is on contemporary and recent American fiction and the way 'real history' figures in the texts.
Within the MA, you will be able to specialise further by concentrating all your energy and creativity in a 15,000-word dissertation of your choice. It is not necessary to have a degree in American Studies or American literature for this degree. There is no core module, although you will be expected to select modules dealing with American literature.
The MA builds on of the lively American Studies dual track programme at the University of Sheffield.
There are a number of studentships and fee bursaries available, funded by either the University or the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Deadlines for funding applications are usually in early spring.
