Program Description:
Doctoral study at the Annenberg School for Communication is research-intensive and interdisciplinary in nature. Our students come from diverse backgrounds, with degrees in areas such as African-American and American Studies, Cultural Studies, English, History, Film/Media Studies, Journalism, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology, among others. In addition to an extensive list of courses, the School provides structured opportunities for graduate students to work with faculty on cutting-edge research. Annenberg Ph.D. candidates can be found studying the development of a media system in war-torn Iraq, studying the effectiveness of anti-smoking communications on society, or closely involved in any number of fascinating studies or research projects. Our alumni can be found teaching communication at leading institutions, working in the offices of national news organizations, or helping set policy in government offices.

Applicants for whom English is a second language are required to take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Testing System (IELTS).The receipt of a baccalaureate or master's degree from a U.S. college or university does not exempt the applicant from submitting official test scores.
The TOEFL is administered by the Educational testing Service (ETS). We will accept only official score reports provided directly by ETS. Scores are valid for two years. You must request that an official report of your scores be sent to The Annenberg School for Communnication, University of Pennsylvania.
