Program Description:
The graduate program in German, which offers the master of arts (M.A.) and the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, concentrates on the analysis of literary and critical discourses, such as romanticism, idealism, historicism, psychoanalysis, expressionism, and criticism of ideology, that helped shape the European intellectual tradition. The purpose of the graduate curriculum is to acquaint students with the history of German letters, to place this history in the European context, and to provide tools for a critical analysis of the discourses involved. This flexible program encourages comparative, theoretically oriented work.
