Program Description:

The McNair Scholars Program is a federally funded TRIO program. An intensive, interdisciplinary undergraduate research program, McNair is designed to prepare high-achieving first generation/low income students and students from underrepresented populations for graduate study. The ultimate goal is to provide undergraduate participants the necessary experience and support to complete doctoral degrees in their chosen disciplines.

By linking academic excellence and social diversity, the McNair Scholars Program seeks to transform personal and academic goals into successful futures. Services include but are not limited to the following: Academic support and advocacy; a resource library; research seminars; faculty mentors; summer research internship; publication in the McNair Research Journal; sponsorship at local, regional, and national research symposia; and graduate school preparation assistance.

The program is open to students who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater, who are first generation/low income or from underrepresented populations, have completed their sophomore year, and have the desire and commitment to complete a doctoral degree.

During the first year of the program, students concentrate on completing a research project in their respective disciplines under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The project culminates in oral presentations at a national conference in the summer. During the second year, the focus turns to helping the students gain admission to the graduate program of their choice and publishing their research.

Eligibility Requirements:

The McNair Scholars Program is open to undergraduates who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater, who are first generation/low income or from underrepresented populations in graduate education (African American, Hispanic, Native American, or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander), have completed their sophomore year, and have the desire and commitment to complete a doctoral degree. Graduate students are not eligible to apply.

International Student Requirements:

Applicants to the McNair Scholars Program must be United States citizens or permanent residents. International students are not eligible to apply.
