Program Description:

The UNC graduate program in History offers personal access to graduate faculty, small seminars, and proximity to regional and national document and resource collections of over four million volumes. Faculty members with expertise in major fields of historical study offer training in national standards of research and writing.

Students may choose to focus on U.S., European, or World history and can choose either to write a thesis based on their own original research or complete the degree through taking comprehensive exams in one of the three fields. MA students in History have a proven track record of recognition for their theses through University-wide awards of distinction. Students may study full-time or part-time, combining coursework with their careers.

Our graduate students in History pursue training for academic careers in universities and community colleges; public history venues like archives, historical societies, museums, and state and national park systems; teaching in the K-12 classroom; and self-employment in research and writing. Recent graduates of our Master’s degree program have advanced to law school, and to doctoral programs at major universities. Other graduates have been employed by community colleges and universities at home and abroad, public school districts, the Army’s Foreign Language Institute, and law firms in Denver and in Washington, DC.

Eligibility Requirements:

Online application and transcripts are submitted to UNC Graduate School. In addition, please submit a 15-page (minimum) writing sample based on primary sources, a statement of purpose, and three letters of recommendation to the Graduate Committee in the History Department. International Student Requirements:

• An international student is neither a citizen of the United States nor classified by United States Immigration and Naturalization Service as a Lawful Permanent Resident or Permanent Resident Alien. • International undergraduate, transfer, and graduate applicants must meet English Language proficiency requirements before being fully admitted to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). One option to demonstrate English Language proficiency is to successfully complete the UNC Intensive English Language Program (IEP).
