Program Information
Degree Offered
PhD - APA-accredited
Program Description:
The theoretical emphasis of our doctoral program is one based on knowledge of the physiological and psychological antecedents of illness and health. The emphasis on health psychology and behavioral medicine supports a natural science approach to the promotion of health, the prevention and treatment of illness, and the identification of etiological and diagnostic correlates of illness and health. Our program emphasizes an interdisciplinary understanding of the total matrix of biopsychosocial factors and techniques relevant to health and illness and the applications of this knowledge to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. We adopt the belief that individuals generally are born well and are made ill by physical and/or social factors. The mind/body bridge needs further appreciation and investigation as we understand and treat psychological and biological functioning.
