Program Description:
The online Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing program prepares you for a career as an independent researcher and faculty member, with a research emphasis on the nursing care of vulnerable and diverse populations. You may enter the program with either a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nursing. In addition, if you have your Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, but have a master's degree in another field, you may be eligible for advanced placement in the program.
Throughout the full- or part-time doctoral program, you will:
-Discover, understand, and critically evaluate the literature in nursing and related fields.
-Apply appropriate principles and procedures to the recognition, evaluation, interpretation, and understanding of issues and problems at the forefront of nursing knowledge.
As a graduate of the program, you will be able to:
-Synthesize and critically evaluate the literature of nursing and related fields to identify issues and critical gaps in scientific nursing knowledge.
-Make significant original contributions to scientific nursing knowledge through the interdisciplinary and independent conduct of basic and clinical research.
-Contribute to the development of scientific methodology for nursing research congruent with the broad concerns of the discipline (physiological, biobehavioral, spiritual, and psychosocial).
-Complete research and direct application of findings in an environment characterized by commitment to high standards of ethical conduct, including, truth, honesty, freedom of inquiry and intellectual autonomy.
-Display readiness for post-doctoral study and early research program development through recognition of high achievement in research and scholarship.
-Develop and assume roles that facilitate discovery, application, and integration of new nursing knowledge.
Designed for working professionals, who are unable to complete a full-time, on-campus program. You will participate in "live" Web classes, which are held at set times that are convenient for most students. You will be required to attend 1 to 2 yearly intensive experiences (3 to 5 days) held on the UND campus in Grand Forks, ND, or at a regional nursing research conference.

The University of North Dakota as a whole is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Eligibility Requirements:
-Completion of a bachelor's or higher degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program or equivalent nursing preparation.
-A GPA of at least 3.00 for all undergraduate work or a GPA of at least 3.00 for the junior and senior years of undergraduate work.
-A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in graduate coursework.
-Graduate Record Examination or Miller's Analogy Test scores from within the previous 5 years.
-Completion of a statistics course.
-A one-page paper stating the applicant's research interests, goals and affiliation with nursing faculty.
-Evidence of current licensure to practice as a registered nurse.
-Three professional letters of recommendation.
-Résumé.
-A minimum TOEFL score of 550 on paper based test or 213 on computer based test.
-An interview will be required for applicants meeting these basic admission requirements.
-Applicant's research interests and professional goals are consistent with program objectives.

If English is not your native language, you must complete the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) prior to admission. If you have received a bachelor's degree or higher from the United States or English-speaking Canada, you are not required to fulfill the English test requirement.
