Program Description:

The University of North Dakota's online Master of Education in English Language Learner (ELL) Education program prepares you to serve linguistically and culturally diverse students in K-12 schools, adult ELL programs, or by teaching English abroad. The part-time, online program is for certified teachers or non-certified individuals interested in working with ELL students.

35 credits are required for graduation, with a minimum of the following:
T&L 514 – Introduction to Multilingual Education (3 Credits)
T&L 523 – Literacy Instruction for ELLs (3 Credits)
T&L 537 – ELL Methods & Materials (3 Credits)
T&L 550 – Assessment & Evaluation of ELLs (3 Credits)
T&L 568 – Research & Advocacy in TESOL (3 Credits)
T&L 580 – Practicum in Schools: ELLs (3 Credits)
EFR 500 – Foundations of Educational Thought (3 Credits)
EFR 506 – Multicultural Education (3 Credits)
T&L 513 – Linguistics for ELL Teachers (3 Credits)
T&L 551 – Second Language Acquisition for ELL Teachers (3 Credits)
T&L 567 – Language Structure & Analysis for ELL Teachers (3 Credits)
T&L 995 – Scholarly Project (2 Credits) OR T&L 997 – Independent Study (2 Credits)

Completion of online coursework meets eligibility requirements for ELL endorsement in most states.

Fully online; you will participate in online activities at your convenience. You are NOT required to come to campus at any time.

Accreditation:

Accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Designed to meet the national Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) specialty program accreditation standards.

Eligibility Requirements:

-Bachelor's degree in education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
-An undergraduate GPA of 2.75 overall or a GPA of 3.00 in the last 2 years of your undergraduate program.
-Submission of 3 letters of recommendation from those who can comment on your academic and/or professional abilities.
-Submission of a 2-3 page personal statement essay.
-Completion of a criminal background check prior to beginning the ELL practicum experience for those not currently employed with or teaching in a public K-12 school.

NOTE: Teacher licensure is not required for admission into the program.

If English is not your native language, you must complete the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) prior to admission. If you have received a bachelor's degree or higher from the United States or English-speaking Canada, you are not required to fulfill the English test requirement.
