M.F.A.-Film and Video Production

Program Description:

The Film and Video Production Concentration is designed to develop individual artistry while establishing a foundation in the theory and practice of film/video production. The MFA is an academic credential and, consequently, emphasizes theory, history, and criticism as a basis for developing production skills. The curriculum consists of a core of required courses in production and theory, a practicum component, and a film/video studies component. Beginning students write short scripts, establish a foundation in theory, law and ethics, and develop competence in the major aspects of production: Cinematography / videography, lighting, sound production, and editing. Competence in production is required before students may undertake practicums. The program requires the completion of 60 semester hours. This usually can be accomplished within six semesters (three years). Students from other disciplines with a strong academic record and evidence of a good visual sense are admitted with the understanding that they will take such prerequisite work as is deemed necessary. Students must submit visual materials (films, videos, or other creative work) for review for admission to the program. The UNC Greensboro Broadcasting and Cinema Department was listed as among the "top U. S. film schools" in an article in the May, 2001, issue of American Cinematographer.
