Program Description:

The Department of Family Studies offers two programs of study leading to a master of science degree in family studies - the Core Areas of Study Program and the Marriage and Family Therapy Program. The Core Areas of Study Program, which offers both thesis and comprehensive exam options, has three foci: child development, child advocacy and family policy; and adolescent development. These foci are designed to develop general competence in understanding and applying theory and research regarding child, adolescent, and family issues. The MFT Program is a two-year, clinical program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education. The MFT program provides theoretical and clinical foundation that qualifies graduates to work as marriage and family therapists in a variety of mental health, social service, and medical settings. Clinical training for the MFT Program is provided at the UNH Marriage and Family Therapy Center and through community partners.

The Department of Family Studies also offers a one-year, 14 to 15-credit, multidisciplinary certificate program in Adolescent Development or Child Advocacy and Family Policy. The certificate program is intended for individuals who are already working in the field, as well as those individuals who are changing careers or who are already working or studying in related fields and need to meet continuing education requirements or desire additional academic preparation. The goal of the certificate program is to build general competence in understanding and applying theory and research, and to develop competency in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and policies that impact children, adolescents, and families.

The Marriage and Family Therapy Program is fully accredited by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
