Program Description:

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics provides a rigorous theoretical and quantitative basis in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory and econometrics for analyzing a variety of applied economic problems. Fields of specialization include Resource and Environmental Economics, Regional Economics, Applied Econometrics, and Applied Microeconomics. Faculty members are highly engaged in research, and the majority of PhD students are employed as Graduate Research Assistants, working directly with these faculty. Teaching Assistantships are also available. The program can accommodate strong prospective students who may have backgrounds in areas other than economics.

The administrative home for the PhD in Economics is in the Department of Resource Economics. Collaboration with the Economics Department in the College of Business provides wide range of coursework, options for applied research, and access to a variety of faculty interests. The academic atmosphere is collegial and supportive, where students and faculty have a high level of contact.

Coursework includes three two-course sequences in Microeconomic Theory, Macroeconomic Theory, and Econometrics; four courses in two applied fields; and six or more elective graduate courses, tailored to each student’s specific academic and research needs.

PhD students demonstrate proficiency in core theory by passing a qualifying exam in Microeconomic Theory and another in their choice of either Macroeconomics or Econometrics. By the end of their second year, students will have identified their fields, areas of research for their dissertation, a permanent advisor, and an academic supervisory committee.

By the end of the third year, each student submits a written dissertation prospectus, with an oral examination. t is expected that dissertation research and writing will not exceed two years, and students are ready to defend their dissertation within 4 to 5 years from the start of the program.
