Program Description:
The MA program requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work; proficiency in reading German and French or Italian (and Greek or Latin for classical archaeology); the passing of a qualifying exam; and the completion of a written thesis. The program may be combined with interdisciplinary minors in Ancient Studies (9-15 hours in one department other than Art History and Archaeology); Medieval and Renaissance Studies; Historic Preservation (additional 15 hours); Museum Studies (additional 12 hours). The Ph.D. program requires an MA in art history or archaeology or its equivalent; for students whose MA did not require a thesis, the department reserves the right to require a substitute. A total of 42-48 hours are required and the student's program is directed by a Doctoral Program Committee. The requirements for a qualifying examination and languages are the same as for the MA, except the students in classical archaeology are expected to have a good reading knowledge of both Greek and Latin.
