Program Information

Degree Offered

Doctoral/Ph.D.

Format: Campus

Program Description:

One of the best funded departments in the Medical School, the Department of Pharmacology has approximately 40 faculty members and 50 graduate students. By recruiting many younger faculty with "3rd millennium" strategies in Pharmacology, the Department is aiming toward the future. The basic goal of our graduate program is to create an environment in which our students have quality support facilities, intellectual guidance, and the freedom to fully develop their potential. Faculty members are committed to ensuring that our program is intensive, intellectually stimulating, and personally rewarding. They address how drugs exert their effects on living systems at all levels of biological organization, from molecules to entire organisms. Students have the opportunity to participate in fascinating research problems in modern pharmacology and drug therapy using state-of-the-art technologies. Specific areas of inquiry include: cell signaling & gene expression, molecular & cell biology of drug addition, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular disease, and DNA damage and cancer biology. We believe these experiences are the ingredients for fully preparing our students as future independent scientists. All Ph.D. students receive a generous research stipend, plus full tuition waiver and health benefits. Merit awards are given to premier applicants.
