Program Information
Degree Offered
Master of Science - Bioinformatics
Format: Campus
Program Description:
Bioinformatics is the application of information technology to the field of biology. The goal of bioinformatics is to understand complex biological data and processes by developing and applying advanced computational techniques such as data mining and machine learning, biostatistics, molecular and systems modelling, and visualisation.
This stream will provide students with a broad education in bioinformatics and significant experience in a specific area of bioinformatics. Students will have the ability to undertake independent research in bioinformatics with the potential to progress to a PhD degree.
Course structure
The Master of Science - Bioinformatics comprises a first year of three alternative streams, depending on each student's prior foundation discipline/s at undergraduate level. The second year elaborates on advanced analysis techniques and includes a significant research project.
Delivery mode and duration
This is a 2 year full-time course, and is also available part-time. All program subjects are delivered on-campus (Parkville).
Entry requirements
Bachelor degree with a major in an appropriate discipline with at least an H3 (65%) average in the major or equivalent.
Appropriate disciplines include:
•biology and biomedicine
•mathematics and statistics
•computer science
Students should also have a background in mathematics and computing equivalent to the completion of at least one semester of university level study in mathematics and one semester of university level study in programming.
