Program Information

Degree Offered

Ph.D.

Program Description:

A comprehensive multidisciplinary predoctoral training program in the molecular and immunopathologic mechanisms of cancer is offered jointly by participating faculty from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Graduate School. This program is funded primarily through a training grant awarded by the NIH-National Cancer Institute and is designed for candidates anticipating careers in research and teaching in cancer-related disciplines. All aspects of the program are monitored by a Cancer Training Committee. Course work includes core courses in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, and cancer biology. Advanced courses in areas relevant to the student's research interests are offered as interdepartmental electives. Students also participate in seminars, journal clubs, and research workshops designed to supplement course work and to help students keep informed of the current literature and recent scientific and technological advances. Laboratory rotations are part of the first-year curriculum; they give trainees an opportunity to familiarize themselves with ongoing research projects of participating faculty members. Following completion of course work, students take a comprehensive qualifying examination before engaging in thesis research. The submission and oral defense of a doctoral thesis is the final requirement for the Ph.D.
