M.E.Sci.
Format: Campus
Program Description:
Geology is the study of the Earth with the emphasis on direct observation and interpretation of rocks exposed at the Earth's surface. This is complementary to Geophysics, in which indirect methods are used to deduce subsurface structure. Important geological skills include mapping the shapes of bodies of rock, identifying their nature and origin, and building a picture of the geological history of a region. These skills are of direct relevance to understanding how the Earth works and also in exploration for natural resources (oil, gas and minerals). All aspects of science are involved in Geology - for example physics helps us understand how rocks fold under stress, the chemistry of once-molten lavas tells us where in the Earth the melt originated from, and the biology of present-day life forms links to the study of fossilised organisms.
