Degree Offered
M.Sc.-International Health
Format: Campus
Program Description:
While average life expectancy at birth has reached 78 years for women in high-income countries, it is less than 46 years for men in sub-Saharan Africa. For millions of children in low-middle income countries, the biggest health challenge is to survive until their fifth birthday, and their chances of doing so are less than they were a decade ago. These are a result of the continuing impact of major communicable diseases - tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS.
The world is economically, politically, culturally, and technologically connected and interdependent. Increasingly mobile populations are seeking economic opportunity and security due to civil unrest and diminished natural resources. Some health problems are specific to the local context. However, many issues transcend geographic boundaries, as should appropriate approaches and solutions. The concept of ‘international health’ describes and addresses these realities.
The purpose of the MSc in International Health is to prepare students to work in changing environments and with diverse populations, and to respond competently to the challenges presented by permeable geographic and cultural boundaries. Students will gain competence in identifying and analysing factors that cause disparities in health status, health resources, and access to health information and health services, particularly for marginalised and vulnerable people. The degree will provide graduates with greater opportunities for careers in international health in globally-focused organisations. The Nuffield Centre has been teaching courses in international health and development for over 30 years, and has established a large alumni network of health managers and planners holding senior positions around the world.
Students will gain competence in identifying and analysing factors that cause disparities in health status, health resources, and access to health information and health services, particularly for marginalised and vulnerable people.
