Program Description:

The first in the UK to study issues of Jewish identity using the methods of cultural studies. The focus of the course is Jewish experience and Modernity, studied from a range of cultural, historical and philosophical perspectives. A particular research emphasis will be the application of cultural analysis to modern Jewish culture. The program will consist of core courses and options conducted through seminars and lectures. A special feature of the core courses will be the participation of distinguished visitors from the field of Jewish scholarship, literature and musical and artistic creation, who will address themselves to such themes as On being an outsider - On being religious - On being assimilated - On being a survivor - On being an exile - On being an Israeli...The course will thus provide a meeting place for the academic and the broader .
