Program Information

Degree Offered

M.A. - Sociology, Ph.D. - Sociology

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The KU Sociology Department is a vibrant community of about 50 graduate students and 20 faculty members. From our pool of applicants, we welcome 7-10 new students into the graduate program each year. Our Department is small enough to allow students to develop mentor-relationships with the faculty members while engaging in a rigorous program of study that focuses heavily on sociological theory, equips students in research skills, and allows them to pursue their interests in a variety of substantive fields.
The graduate program allows students to develop programs emphasizing traditional and nontraditional specialties in sociology or a combination of sociology and related fields. Students can readily develop programs of study in each of the following fields: family, life course & aging, gender, sexuality, globalization, migration, medicine / health, political sociology, race & ethnicity, social inequality / stratification, culture, religion, and economic sociology. For more information visit our website.

Accreditation:

University of Kansas

International Student Requirements:

International applicants are required to submit scores on both the GRE and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Academic Format of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) administered by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. Provide a statement of financial means for support during graduate studies at the University of Kansas. Credible documentary evidence of financial support must be provided before an I-20 form (for F-1 status) or a DS-2019 form (for J-1 status) can be issued. Applicants who have studied in universities in other countries must make certain that a brief description of their major programs of study, their university's grading scale, and their rank relative to other students is provided to the Director of Graduate Studies.
