The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation has been ranked as one of the top twenty academic programs nationally. The department has benefited from the leadership of four professionally prestigious chairpersons, beginning with James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. He was succeeded by Forrest "Phog" Allen, renowned as one of the earliest and most successful basketball coaches.
