Program Description:

Iowa’s top-ranked graduate program prepares advanced practitioners in anesthesia, gerontology, child health, informatics, genetics and more. Master’s, Ph.D. and D.N.P. degrees with full-time, part-time and online options available.

Master’s Program
Graduates of the MSN program at The University of Iowa practice as clinical specialists, nurse managers, and nurse educators. Six of our programs are ranked among the top 11 in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s survey of public universities. *

The MSN degree can be tailored to meet the needs of most students seeking a higher degree of nursing practice. Minimum requirements for the master's degree in nursing vary from 33 - 61 semester hours, depending on the area of study. The basic program of study for the master's degree is the 33-semester hour Basic MSN program, which is ranked No. 9 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, includes core and advanced core courses. Elective courses allow students to focus on a variety of areas of interest.

Doctor of Philosophy Program
The PhD program at Iowa prepares individuals to conduct research in nursing, to expand the nursing knowledge base, and to collaborate in interdisciplinary research. Graduates of the program are prepared for careers as researchers, faculty, consultants, and as leaders within the profession, in health policy making agencies, and within the health care delivery system.

Iowa faculty are recognized internationally for their cutting-edge research in a variety of nursing fields, and understand the student’s need for flexible programs and individualized study. You may enter with a BSN or MSN. Many choose part-time study and complete the PhD while continuing to work full-time.

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program
The D.N.P. is the terminal degree for nurse practitioners. Iowa’s program includes emphasis on leadership training and immersion in public policy and advocacy, specialty systems, nursing informatics, and change theory
