Program Information

Degree Offered

Ph.D. - Psychology

Program Description:

Iowa's training focuses on scientific approaches to the understanding of psychological disorders and the influence of psychological factors on health, marital and family relationships, and other important life domains. It been ranked a Top 10 program by U.S. News and World Report. Active research areas include: health psychology; diagnosis and assessment; depressive, anxiety, and personality disorder; marital and family dysfunction, structural and genetic models of psychopathology, statistical modeling and meta-analysis. The PhD Program: The Clinical Psychology training program, fully approved by the American Psychological Association, strongly emphasizes a scientific approach to the study of clinical psychological phenomena. It is designed for students who primarily are interested in developing scholarly understanding of clinical phenomena and acquiring research skills necessary to the systematic investigation of such phenomena. Recognizing the importance of clinical skills in this type of research, the department closely integrates practicum experience in the Carl E. Seashore Psychology Clinic with course work and supervised research experience. Faculty members and students collaborate actively with colleagues from many departments at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and at the Veterans' Affairs Medical Center. The designation "clinical psychology" on the official transcript requires satisfactory completion of a one-year internship at an approved agency before receiving the doctoral degree. The internship ordinarily comes after completion of all course work and of most, if not all, of the dissertation project. The program is highly selective, admitting only 4-8% of applicants. All admitted students are guaranteed at least 5 years of funding. Additional information is available only by directly e-mailing the program.
