Program Information
Degree Offered
M.A.;, Ph.D.
Program Description:
Both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in American Studies at Iowa. Each possesses a distinctive rationale taken with equal seriousness by the faculty. Although there are exceptions, the Ph.D. program is designed mainly to prepare scholars for research, writing, teaching, and administrative leadership in highereducation, while the M.A. program prepares students to present scholarship to a more general audience. The M.A. is not, then, a prerequisite or prelude to the doctorate, though it is possible to acquire the degrees in sequence. Applicants to the graduate program are encouraged to work directly toward their ultimate degreeobjective.
