Program Description:
The graduate social studies education programs at The University of Iowa prepare teachers for instructional leadership in the social studies at the Master of Arts and Ph.D. levels. Programs are available for students interested in elementary education, secondary education, or both. Social studies programs at The University of Iowa emphasize interdisciplinary explorations. Course offerings highlight global perspectives, multicultural education, community service learning, education for democratic citizenship, and social justice issues.
The two Social Studies Education Master of Arts programs (A & B) provide opportunities for interdisciplinary work in history, social science or related areas for classroom teachers, high school department chairs, and others interested in history and the social sciences. M.A. Program A is for teachers already holding teacher licensure. This program provides opportunities for in-depth study of social studies curricula and pedagogy, as well as new developments in history and the social sciences. M.A. Program B is designed for individuals seeking state certification for the first time who want to teach history or social science in secondary schools.
The Ph.D. program prepares supervisors, curriculum directors, teacher education personnel, and college instructors in the social sciences and pedagogy. Students enroll in courses in history, social sciences, or related areas, depending on the background and goals of the candidate. In addition, they enroll in advanced seminars on the history and philosophical foundations of social studies education, civics education, research approaches to social studies education, and problems of historical understanding. Candidates for the Ph.D. also participate in the research and college teaching activities of the social studies education program during their residence at The University of Iowa.
