Program Description:

The University of Idaho's Division of Entomology in the Department of Plant, Soil and Entomological Science is dedicated to developing and communicating knowledge about the biology of insects, the problems they cause and benefits they can provide for human beings. Several of our research programs focus on the biology and ecology of pests affecting the major crops of Idaho and the region. We also conduct research on the biology of mosquitoes that can vector human pathogens and on insects as biological control agents to manage invasive weeds. Each of these research programs requires to varying degrees, study of the behavior, ecology, chemical ecology and physiology of insects.
The department offers Idaho's only: Bachelor of Science degrees in Horticulture, Crop and Weed Science and Soil and Land Resources; Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Entomology, Plant Science, and Soil Science; and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Entomology, Plant Science, and Soil Science.

International Student Requirements:

All applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL). International students from English-speaking countries and those who have earned a degree from either a U.S. institution or an institution in another English-speaking country are not required to submit a TOEFL score. The test uses a multiple-choice format to measure the ability to understand North American English, and it consists of three sections: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension. A score of at least of at least 213 on the Computer Based Test (CBT) or 79 Internet Based Test(IBT) is required for admission into the Department of Plant, Soil and Entomological Sciences. The university's minimum TOEFL score for admission is 550. Official TOEFL score reports must be mailed to the Graduate Admissions Office by the testing agency.
