Program Information
Degree Offered
Ph.D. - Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology
Program Description:
Pharmaceutics focuses on the study of the physical, chemical and biological properties of drugs and dosage forms, and examines the relationship of drug properties to dosage form design, fabrication, evaluation and therapeutic efficacy. Students can develop research programs in the areas of drug delivery systems, drug transport, stability and metabolism, dosage forms and pharmacokinetics. Pharmacology is the study of the mechanism of action of drugs and their effects on normal and disease states. It is a science based upon integrating chemistry, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology and physiology. Students can develop research projects in the areas of renal physiology, autonomic and central nervous systems, cardiovascular pharmacology, signal transduction, cellular neurophysiology of exercise and aging, protein biochemistry, drug screening and design, and natural products. A high proportion of the training faculty in both Pharmacology and Pharmaceutics are federally-funded and provide superb opportunities for students to train in the above areas, publish their work in peer-reviewed journals, travel to scientific meetings, and after graduation, secure positions in academia, industry, or government. The Dept. of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences is located at both the University of Houston campus and in the nearby Texas Medical Center (TMC). Many of our faculty members collaborate with TMC institutions such as the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine, Methodist Hospital and Univ. of Texas Health Sciences Center. All incoming students, both domestic and international, receive financial support.
