Program Description:

The Creative Writing Program in the Department of English is one of the few in the nation offering students a choice among three advanced degrees in poetry and fiction. The MA and PhD degrees are in literature and creative writing, preparing students for an academic career with a course of study which includes literary criticism, theory, and the history of literature as well as creative writing workshops. The MFA is regarded as a terminal degree in creative writing with its emphasis solidly on the student's fiction or poetry writing. Completion of each of the degrees requires a creative thesis or dissertation, a work which has often become the nucleus for the graduate's first published volume.
