Program Description:

This is a conversion Masters/ Postgraduate Diploma program available by full-time or part-time study. It offers a focused investigation of an important area of numerical mathematics which is used, for example, in scheduling, control and data analysis. The course encompasses the modelling of real-world problems andtheir solution by a diverse range of techniques including the classical simplex approach and the recent interior point methods for non-linearly constrained problems. Students will be encouraged to look at practical case studies and to appreciate the importance of good software. Successful completion of this program could enable you to proceed to a research degree or to find employment in a wide range of industrial and commercial environments, including government departments. It can be especially relevant in minimising the environmental impact of industrial or government projects. You could also act as an industrial consultant. The postgraduate diploma consists of taught courses in linear and non-linear optimisation as well as a major complementary element of guided private study. For an MSc you subsequently undertake a dissertation in an area of your interest. The Numerical Optimisation Centre at the University of Hertfordshire has been at the forefront of the field for more than 25 years and has published over 300 technical reports during that time. It has helped many commercial organisations with their optimisation problems.
