Program Description:

The course gives a good understanding of general optoelectronic principles, components and systems so that your knowledge can be readily updated when further advances occur. Optoelectronic devices, taught in the first semester, establishes fundamental optoelectronic concepts and applies these to understanding the operation of basic optoelectronic devices such as lasers, light-emitting diodes, optical detectors, modulators and optical fibres and their operational characteristics. Optoelectronic systems, taught in the second semester, examines how devices are combined in particular applications and introduces more advanced concepts. The design strategy, analysis of operation, system performance and limitations of operation will be discussed critically. Specific topics will be selected from: optical fibre communications, laser machining, optical displays, imaging systems, optical telemetry, remote sensing, barcode readers, integrated optics. Laboratory programs familiarise you with standard optoelectronic measuring techniques and give practical expertise in measuring device performance and system evaluation. The specialised named degree in Optoelectronics requires at least two thirds of your chosen modules including your project to be relevant to Optoelectronics.
