Program Description:

The advent of powerful workstations and ever more efficient personal computers has had a considerable impact on the design of digital systems. The principles of digital systems are important and are taught on the course, and the use of computers in improving efficiency, accuracy and ultimate quality is also heavily stressed and encouraged in hands-on sessions. Within the last decade it has become increasingly feasible for the small firm or even the individual engineer to design and implement complex digital systems from the component and board level upwards. It is the overall aim of the course to equip students with the knowledge and expertise to design, implement and test easily manufactured complex digital systems, both with and without the backing of a large corporate structure. You will become proficient in designing and testing combinatorial and sequential systems both on chips and printed circuit boards. These include microprocessors and interfaces relevant to classic applications and a wide range of other uses. Consideration is given to both hardware and software design and test problems and their efficient solution. The specialised degree in Digital Systems requires at least two thirds of your chosen modules including your project to be relevant to Digital Systems.
