Program Description:
The Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program at the University of Georgia is comprised of graduate students, faculty, staff, scientists, and post-doctoral fellows from several departments within the University. The program is committed to a high quality graduate education and excellence in research, and both faculty and graduate students have received national recognition for their endeavors. The University of Georgia offers the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in toxicology in three different areas of emphasis.
Ecological Toxicology
Faculty in this emphasis area are primarily focused on understanding the effects and influence of xenobiotics on the environment and organisms that live in the environment. Using a wide range of scientific methods faculty are involved with species ranging from black flies, fish, amphibians, dapnia, bacteria, mussels, crocodiles and birds.
Computational Toxicology:
Faculty in this emphasis area are interested in understanding and describing quantitative relationships between exposure to xeniobiotics and either the pharmacokinetics of the xeniobiotic or the adaptive or adverse responses to the xeniobiotic. Research involves both laboratory data collection and computer based methods.
Mechanistic Toxicology:
Faculty in this emphasis area have research interests in understanding the details of how xenobiotics interact with mammalian and non-mammalian species at the level of DNA, proteins, signaling pathways, cells and or even organs. A large number of tools or research methods exist to study mechanisms of action of chemicals and pathogens on biological systems
